Editorial Reviews

If you want to scare the pants off your 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds, but then make them merrily sing along, this Halloween collection could be for you. A generous 18 tracks deep, Spooky Favorites covers the familiar creepy-crawly terrain of "Cockles and Mussels," "Spider on the Floor," and "There Was an Old Woman" with all the right affects. Favorites also trades in Christmas tunes, reworking "The 12 Days of Christmas" as "12 Days of Halloween," while "Green Gremlins" reprises the "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" theme in a halting tempo with a tasty rock guitar solo. And in another ironic twist, the players turn "Bring Back My Bonney" into "Bring Back My Neighbors to Me" and rewrite "If You're Happy and You Know It" as "You're Scary and You Know It." Highly theatrical and leaning on a good interplay of English folk melodies and music-hall styles, Spooky Favorites is proof that you can spoof just about any song for Halloween as long as you dress them up real spookylike. --Martin Keller

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5--The Herdmans are back and still causing havoc. This large family of ruffians has terrorized the community in the past by turning on the sprinklers and nearly drowning all the turkeys, spray painting kids, stealing cakes, and making kids buy back their own candy. This time, in an effort to avoid the inevitable Herdman-induced chaos of the Halloween activities, Principal Crabtree proposes that the celebration be held at the school, under the watchful eyes of parents and teachers. The kids are bummed because it will be a trick-or-treatless night, and they would rather face the Herdmans on the street than miss the candy. However, the Herdmans manage to turn the event into a disaster for the adults, and the best Halloween ever for the children. The writing is fast paced and funny, and the plot takes some unexpected if not entirely believable twists; for example, a trap door in the teachers' lounge leads to a boiler room filled with holiday candy stolen and stashed by the Herdmans over the years. This book will have a wide readership, particularly with fans of Robinson's The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (1972) and The Best School Year Ever (1994, both HarperCollins).--Lee Bock, Glenbrook Elementary School, Pulaski, WI

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. Except for Imogene, the Herdmans have stayed out of sight, and that's been worrying Beth Bradley and the other kids at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. It's also worried the mayor, who has canceled trick-or-treating and suspended all candy sales because of previous Herdman Halloween mayhem. The kids aren't looking forward to the alternative celebration--a tame, school-sponsored party, "with a lot of fake witches and spooky music on the PA, and little kid games." But could the Herdmans be planning to sabotage the event? With all the kids in one place, the possibilities are terrifying! Robinson's suspenseful romp will delight fans of previous books featuring the Herdman kids: the buildup to the mischievous collaboration is deliciously tense, the actual pranks are satisfyingly scary, and readers will agree that the Herdmans' interference results in the best Halloween ever. Editorial Reviews

"Oh, the bats (squeak, squeak) sing a squeaky song, and they sing (squeak, squeak) nearly all night long, catching bugs (squeak, squeak) till the break of dawn, then the bats (squeak, squeak) fly away." In Sue Schnitzer's musical world, Halloween is infinitely more fun than scary. A creaking-door sound introduces this folksy, downright perky CD of original or newly arranged children's songs such as "Your Bones" ("your thigh bone's connected to your knee bone," etc.) and a hauntingly beautiful version of "Ghost of John," with deep, mournful cello and flute. First graders from Crest View Elementary School in Boulder sing, scream, or giggle along with these festive songs about pumpkins, skeletons, bats, witches, monsters, and ghosts. Sue Schnitzer sings and plays guitar, but a bass, fiddle, keyboard, harmonica, flute, drums, and a cello join in as well. Pleasantly eerie tunes like "All Skin and Bones" are punctuated by long "ooooohs" and plenty of repetition that make it fun for kids to sing along even without knowing all the lyrics. The CD ends with a minute's worth of very silly Halloween riddles such as "Why did Dracula have no friends? Because he's a pain in the neck." (Maniacal giggles follow.) A few more Halloween jokes speckle the liner notes, along with some ideas for Halloween crafts. Young ghouls and boys will certainly revel in this wonderfully eclectic trick-or-treat bag of Halloween songs. Boo! (Ages 4 to 7) --Karin Snelson

A great selection of not-so-often-heard Halloween songs with a folky, sing-along sound.
